Showcase 2019 in Melbourne and Sydney was a huge success. The performance was dedicated to The Australian Ballet School founder Dame Margaret Scott AC DBE who passed away earlier year. In this performance we honoured her, with students from across all levels coming together onstage in The Australian Ballet School’s Défilé, specially choreographed by one of our Resident Choreographers, Simon Dow.
This year we have had the great privilege of working with one of Balanchine’s most respected repetiteurs Victoria Simon, staging George Balanchine’s Who Cares? Set to George Gershwin’s music, it is an exciting, entertaining and enjoyable ballet, and as a School it is an honour to present this joyous work so often performed by major international companies.
Students had the stimulating experience of working with our Resident Choreographers, Margaret Wilson and Simon Dow, in their revised works Journey and Divertissement as well as new creations, After Escher and Con Brio. Richard House, 2010 ABS alumnus, created his first work for the School, Sketch Tone, featuring our Level 5 students, and guest choreographer Leigh Rowles returned to restage her exciting work, La Tarantella Italiana, on our Level 7 students.
“I was totally hypnotised by the choreography and the quality of the performances from the dancers, which required from them a great deal of maturity and skill.” – Theatre Press
“..the 2019 graduates in Divertissement who grasped this opportunity to flaunt their individual talents with all the grace and flair of seasoned performers.” – Be Melbourne
“There was a lot of love in the room, with bursts of eager applause heard at many moments throughout the show.” – Theatre People
“La Tarantella Italiana, choreographed by guest [choreographer] Leigh Rowles, brought the second group of works to an extra-exhilarating end as the Level 7 students danced with style, enthusiasm and big smiles.” – Dance Australia
