The Australian Ballet School is Australia’s national centre for elite vocational classical dance and the school of The Australian Ballet.
The School’s eight level programme aims to produce graduates of the highest calibre who are capable of integrating effortlessly into The Australian Ballet and top professional dance companies in Australia and around the world.
"The Australian Ballet School aims to develop
well-balanced human beings, with a strong ethical sense,
who are well fed in body, mind and spirit"
The School’s After School and Full Time training takes place in Melbourne but we cater to students outside Melbourne via our Intrastate/Interstate/International Training Programme (ITP). Entry into these programmes is via audition. The School also has a Boarding Programme which allows students from outside Melbourne to join the Full Time programme and live in a safe and nurturing environment with their peers.
The School also offers Open Classes in Melbourne and around Australia which any student can join without the need to audition.
We are a Registered Training Organisation offering accredited courses which at the highest level have our Level 8 students achieving a Graduate Diploma in Classical Ballet. The School believes students should maintain their academic studies whilst developing their dance skills, so in partnership with VCASS students are also able to finish secondary school and earn their VCE.
Our aim is to balance the rigorous demands of professional training with a creative, caring and challenging environment where excellence can flourish. The School continues to evolve its world-class health and well-being systems which focus on supporting the physical, emotional and mental health needs of students.
As part of the School’s commitment to the art of ballet we also train teachers. Many students of the School go on to professional careers in dance and then transition into teaching via our Graduate Diploma of Elite Dance Instruction.
The Australian Ballet School aims to develop well-balanced human beings, with a strong ethical sense, who are well fed in body, mind and spirit. This holistic ideal is the core of our success in developing the artistic leaders of the future and the ranks of our graduates include the Artistic Director and most of the Principal Artists of The Australian Ballet, world famous choreographers such as Graeme Murphy AM and Meryl Tankard, and dancers who have succeeded in the very best international companies; such as Hannah O'Neill of Paris Opera Ballet.
