We are thrilled to announce that The Australian Ballet School will bring to life one of Australia's beloved best-selling children’s books in a brand new ballet adaptation. Get ready to embark on a whimsical journey as we invite you to experience the enchantment of Possum Magic on stage!
A timeless Australian classic written by Mem Fox and illustrated by Julie Vivas, Possum Magic has captivated and enchanted young people since its publication in 1983.
Mem Fox, Author of Possum Magic says,“The Australian Ballet School’s choice of Possum Magic to develop as a ballet this year, of all years – its 40th anniversary – has raised the book to an unexpected pinnacle and made me the proudest writer in Australia. The pages of Possum Magic have provided a magical experience for parents and children for forty years. I am very excited to see the magic leap from the page to the stage through the artistry of The Australian Ballet School.”
Julie Vivas, Illustrator of Possum Magic, says“I am always excited when fresh ideas come in a new medium for Possum Magic. The creative vision of talented choreographer Loughlan Prior, combined with an uplifting original score composed by Claire Cowan and incredible costumes designed by Emma Kingsbury will transport audiences into a world of wonder and imagination.
Possum Magic choreographer Loughlan Prior says,“I am so excited to adapt this beloved Australian children’s story into a beautiful narrative ballet, unifying our new score with dazzling designs and choreographic storytelling. It is an honour to work with the talented pre-professional students of The Australian Ballet School.”
While Possum Magic has previously inspired orchestral and theatre performances, this will be the first-ever ballet about the young and courageous possumnamed Hush and her magical Grandma Poss.
